Pamela Thompson Artist Biography
Born in Evanston, Illinois and raised is Wilmette, a village just north of Chicago, Pamela Thompson was surrounded by creative people. Her Father, a musician, and Mother, a part time actress/full time homemaker, were always supportive of any form Pamela's creativity took. Pamela was also influenced by her Mother's sister who taught her the basics of sewing at age 6. Early on, it was clear that Pamela had strong creative abilities. In high school she explored art, acting, music, computer graphics and design. Upon graduation, she decided to steer her creative energies into a field that would allow her to combine her artistic sense with functionality, by studying to become a fashion designer. Pamela graduated, with honors, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, in 1993, and holds both a Bachelor of Science and Associate of Arts degree in Fashion Design. Since that time, Pamela has lived and worked in New York City: For the past 10 years as a Fashion, Graphic and Web Designer. In the late 90's, Pamela launched a collection of her own young designer sportswear at the 7th on Sixth Fashion Week, in Bryant Park. Shortly thereafter, she opened her own signature boutique in New York's East Village. During her career, she has worked with such notable designers as Rebecca Danenberg, and Anna Sui. Pamela most recently worked as the Head Fashion Designer at Betsey Johnson, in New York City for 3 ½ yrs. Although beginning as a fashion designer, Pamela has learned through time that art is the only true creative outlet that does not limit her. In art there are no rules, no sizes to fit, no washing instructions, and no gender boundaries to adhere to. This realization has propelled Pamela into the world of art. Pamela's first assault on the art world was with an exhibition of her 3 dimensional boxed pieces, at a gallery show sponsored by Concept Management Group, LTD in August, 2002. Pamela was written up in Women's Wear Daily with rave reviews. Her most recent show, again sponsored by CMG was held in April 2003, in association with TOAST - The Tribeca Art Walk, and featured a number of young artists whose pieces were available for sale during the five day show. Pamela's most popular piece "The Boob Tube" sold to Shiri Efrati, a New York Representative of Artlink at Sotheby's. At show's end, Pamela sold 3 of the nine pieces she displayed, and incidentally was the only artist to sell besides her husband, David. Most recently, Pamela was accepted as a Finalist for the International Young Artist show sponsored by Artlink at Sotheby's. Her work is set to be displayed in Moscow and Amsterdam, and will be auctioned off in Tel-Aviv. Pamela's artwork was part of a collective in the Chelsea Arts Building in September of 2004, as part of City Found. From there, Pamela hooked up with gallery owner Laurence Assaraf, who owns A Taste of Art in Tribeca NYC. She showed with one other artist in a show in January of 2005. Pamela is currently looking for additional representation. Pamela and her husband, David - also an artist - presently live and maintain a studio in Malverne, New York, just outside of New York City. |
